With the Central District Health Department working to get through phase 1B, community members are volunteering to help speed up the process. “Grand Island Professional Firefighters have been helping out for about four weeks,” said IAFF 647 Grand Island Firefighters Union Communications Director Jared Stockwell. They’ve been supporting the health department with their weekly vaccine clinics. “We have a smaller clinic like today (Wednesday) and then we’ve also had larger clinics where we’ve given out as many as 900, 1,300, vaccinations in a single day,” Stockwell said. The health department is averaging about 1,000 to 1,500 shots a day. “Without those volunteers we would just have Central District Health Department staff, we would maybe do a quarter of that if that,” said CDHD Director Teresa Anderson. Recently they’ve had more people support these efforts.
