Authorities responded to a fatal explosion near Bassett Monday morning. Bassett Fire Chief Jim Stout said that a construction worker had died during an explosion east of Bassett that destroyed a new home that was under construction. Chief Stout said that around 8:33 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to a report of an explosion and smoke coming from the site of a new house that was under construction about six miles east and two miles south of Bassett. Stout said that when they arrived, the home had been blown to pieces and was on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames and initiated a search for survivors. According to Stout, there was one victim who was found dead at the scene. Officials said that the man was believed to be a construction worker who was working on the house when the explosion happened.
