A newly adopted and spayed dog, named Cher, was rescued by firefighters in Bayonne on Saturday from the currents of the Kill van Kull before being reunited with her owner, officials said. "Today's response by several units of the Fire Department, including the Marine Unit, as well as the quick actions of police officers from both Bayonne and Port Authority proved to be the difference in rescuing this dog from danger,'' said Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver in a statement posted on the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management Facebook page. The dog, who was wearing an Elizabethan collar after her surgery, got loose Saturday afternoon and police were tracking her along Dennis Collins Park, which is located along the waterfront, but the officers attempt to corral the dog were unsuccessful before the pooch jumped into the waterway, officials said in the statement.
