PHOTOS: Firefighters responded to a three-alarm fire in the early morning hours at a home on Walnut Street.
Smoke could be seen rising from the home on the dead-end street at 5:45 a.m. as firefighters doused a heavily damaged area of the home.
A female was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, Assistant Fire Chief Thomas Loreto said.
A nearby resident, who declined to give her name, said she and her family were asked to evacuate their neighboring home at about 4:15 a.m. As they stood outside, they saw flames from inside the other home, she added. The front and right side of the house appeared to have heavy damage. A portion of the right side of the home nearing the backyard appears completely burned.
Emergency vehicles from Ramsey, Ho-Ho-Kus and Wyckoff responded to assist Mahwah at the home. Bergen County Prosecutors Office and Bergen County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit were also at the scene.
