A pesky blaze on Ocean Avenue in Jersey City that took two visits from firefighters 12 hours apart has left 14 people temporarily displaced, city officials said.
Firefighters responding to 738 Ocean Ave., near Virginia Ave., at 8:34 p.m. Monday found a fire in the kitchen and hallway of a multi-family building, city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione said. The one-alarm fire was under control within 30 minutes and no injuries were reported, but the damage to the second floor was extensive, Wallace-Scalcione said. At 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, firefighters returned to the building, which is also 740 Ocean Ave., on the report of a smoke condition. Wallace-Scalcione said it was caused by a small pocket of smoldering insulation and that firefighters quickly extinguished the insulation.
