Fireman Jack Willer managed to celebrate his 98th birthday Monday without melting the frosting off his cake.
Fellow firefighters spared Willer — their oldest member — a 98-candle blowout, substituting the numbers "98" for the same number of candles on his birthday cake during a dinner and "This is Your Life" Power Point presentation at the Bender Court facility.
"Jack drives to drill every Monday night, attends our monthly meetings, is a member of the memorial committee and a great help to the kitchen committee," said Tom Donch, former mayor and president of the Franklin Lakes Fire Department. "Jack no longer responds to alarms, but he is always willing to offer help in any way he is able."
