The city of Trenton sent Engine Co. 8 back to its firehouse on Stuyvesant Avenue Thursday morning, four days after suddenly shuttering the century-old building in the West Ward due to structural issues. Engine Co. 8 was temporarily relocated about two miles west on Sunday to the firehouse on West State Street, which houses Engine Co. 9. The city administration had an engineer examine the Stuyvesant Ave. building, which opened in 1914. “A structural engineer gave the green light for operation. There were minor, non-hazardous, electrical issues that are being addressed; only slight upgrades to the system are needed,” city spokesman Connor Ilchert said. “The City needed to ensure that its employees were in a safe working environment,” he said of the closure. Ilchert confirmed that the structural concern was the floor, as firefighters suspected.
