A major fire broke out in a Perth Amboy on Saturday afternoon, damaging two homes and affecting dozens of people.
Perth Amboy Fire Chief Ed Mullen said the fire displaced 28 people.
The four-alarm fire was reported at 1:46 p.m. at 217 Washington St. before eventually spreading to a neighboring home at 211-213 Washington St. Everyone in the two homes escaped without injury, according to Mullen, but three firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion. Perth Amboy firefighters were assisted by fire departments from Keasbey, Melrose, Morgan, South Amboy, Iselin, New Market, East Brunswick, North Brunswick and Plainsboro, according to a Facebook post from the Perth Amboy Fire Department.
According to CBS New York, the fire lasted for more than three hours.
The fire is still under investigation, according to Middlesex County Fire Marshal Mike Gallagher.
Mullen said that the Red Cross is currently working to help the affected residents.
