Students at the Ethel McKnight School in Twin Rivers had a special treat on Friday, May 31, as the annual “field day” included a visit from East Windsor Fire Co. 2. And it didn’t take long before everybody got a little wet. “Kids love fire engines and hoses,” said Station 46 Chief Mario Batista, “And when you put those two together, it a recipe for a lot of fun.” As the big yellow fire trucks stretched their hose lines and nozzles into the field, children in grades one through five lined up. The object was to knock a ball off a traffic cone. Even the firefighters guiding the teams started to show their competitive spirit. “It’s all about the kids,” says Chief Batista, “we get to the parents through them, teaching them fire safety and realizing that all of our firefighters are their neighbors.” Many of the awe-struck students had never been close to a fire truck before, and a number of them said they wanted to be firefighters when they grow up.
