An accident that shut down Route 80 westbound in the Delaware Water Gap on Friday made the commute home for some more than 11 hours long. According to New Jersey State Police spokeperson Sgt. Jeff Flynn, an oversized generator estimated at 75,000 pounds fell off a Kenworth truck about 1 p.m. at milepost 1.2 while the driver was negotiating a curve on the highway and pinned a Lincoln MKX. The driver of the truck sustained no reported injuries, Flynn said, while the driver of the Lincoln had only minor injuries. A dog that had to be extracted from the car by Knowlton responders also had only minor injuries. Flynn said both lanes were shut down on the westbound side for five hours for the State Police investigation. Once the State Police cleared the scene, Flynn said, only the right lane was reopened, while the state Department of Transportation handled cleanup efforts. For drivers, the wait on the highway generated commuting nightmare stories, as traffic was diverted onto local roads.
