A vacant house on East 28th Street caught fire and temporarily forced out residents in a neighboring home. Paterson firefighters could see a large amount of smoke coming from the house just after 5 a.m., said Deputy Chief Frank Calamita. The house suffered serious damage and was fully exposed. The two-alarm fire affected the neighboring homes. One of the homes also was vacant but the second home received water damage and had its utilities turned off. Flames melted the siding on both homes. Calamita said the fire department was already on the road for an activated fire alarm when they received word that the vacant house was on fire. It was under control by 6:50 a.m. No firefighters were injured and the cause of the fire and where it started is under investigation, said Calamita.
