A Newark fire captain was injured Monday night while battling a three-alarm blaze that spread to three buildings and forced 10 families from their homes, officials said.
Firefighters were called at 6:55 p.m. for a blaze at a three-story building on the first block of Mt. Prospect Avenue, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said. The fire quickly escalated to three alarms and a total of 85 firefighters were called to the scene to battle the blaze. A fire captain was taken to University Hospital for neck injuries, officials said. No other injuries were reported.
The extensive damage displaced 10 families, including 15 adults, eight children and three pet dogs, though officials said that number could increase.
