Ernest Rosolen, who spent his life being a living example of volunteerism, has died at the age of 85.
Rosolen was recently honored for his 60 years of service with the city's Fire Company 4, City Council from 1982 and participation on numerous boards, including zoning. He was also a past president of the South Bergen Fire Chiefs Association, Garfield Rotary and the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield.
"His family spent a lot of time sharing him with the city and most of that time was as a volunteer," City Manager Tom Duch said.
Rosolen worked at Garden State Paper in the city until he retired in 1999. He was also a part-time fire inspector for the city until his death on Monday. Duch and Rosolen served on the City Council together where they were "allies for doing what was right for the city."
Rosolen also filled in as city manager when Duch was out.
