A passing driver spotted a house fire in Garwood on Tuesday morning and called 911. At around 11:07 a.m. the driver saw smoke coming from 345 Second Ave. in Garwood and reported it to Garwood Dispatch, said Garwood Police Chief James Wright. When firefighters and police got to the home they could see a large amount of smoke coming from the house, said Wright. A single resident reported to be a 36-year-old woman was still in the home trying to put out the fire in a first-floor bedroom, said Wright. The officers helped the woman out of the home and she was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation by Union County EMS. The woman refused further medical help and was not taken to a hospital. The Garwood Fire Department along with Fire units from Cranford, Westfield, Roselle, Linden and Union came to help.
