WILDLAND FIRE

Fire season starts in Valencia County
Although spring has just barely begun, fire personnel across Valencia County are already into fire season and responding to wildland fires. Valencia County Fire Chief Matt Propp said the beginning of fire season is typically when higher fire behavior risk can be anticipated due to increasing temperatures and winds and decreasing humidity. “Conditions that basically makes an opportunity for rapidly progressing fires, particularly in areas with brush, grass and trees,” Propp said. “As we get into summer, the hot winds dry up ground fuels super quick. So now we have dry fuel on the ground and it only takes a small fire that runs into something larger, a bosque fire for example.” This is the time of year when homeowners begin cleaning up their properties after the winter doldrums, and Propp said there are precautions they should take.

Albuquerque Fire Rescue: 800 more calls for outside fires year-to-date than in 2023
VIDEO: They’ve created a special unit to deal with the problem but Albuquerque Fire Rescue (AFR) says the amount of outside fires sparked in Albuquerque has led to an alarming number of major structures catching fire along with them. News 13 talked with AFR about how fast the problem is spreading. Remnants of an outside fire AFR was called out to earlier this month can still be seen behind a strip mall on northeast Lomas Boulevard: “The fire was right up against the building and underneath the window so they recognized that the window had failed and the fire had gotten inside the structure,” said Lieutenant Jason Fejer, Public Information Officer for AFR. This structure makes the third outside fire they were called out to this winter which also caught a major commercial building on fire.
