VIDEO: People near Portales were evacuated from their homes Wednesday afternoon as the winds fueled a 1,000-acre grass fire in Floyd, near Highway 267 and Roosevelt Road. Fire officials say the blaze is now fully contained. The Portales Fire Department said crews are working on mopping up some hotspots. The fire located in the area of Roosevelt Rd. Y and State Highway 267 and prompted some evacuations. NM267 was closed at Roosevelt County Road U and NM 236 due to poor visibility from smoke and dust. Motorists were advised to seek an alternate route and watch for emergency vehicles and personnel in the area. Officials said the fire started around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday and at least four structures were lost.
