Smoke from the Francisquito Fire burning west of Taos was expected to impact the Taos Valley less Sunday (July 21) than the prior couple of days now that ground and aerial ignitions had been completed, according to Carson National Forest officials. The fire was estimated at about 2000 acres by Sunday morning. It was sparked by lightning July 13 near Forest Road 44 and Forest Road 123 about seven miles north of El Rito in the El Rito Ranger District of the Carson. Crews ignited about 1,000 acres Saturday (July 20). Smoke will still be visible from Taos, Peñasco, Española, Abiquiu, and El Rito areas. "The primary goal on the Francisquito fire will now be to secure all existing containment lines," according to a fire update at 9 a.m. Sunday from Carson National Forest. "Firefighters continue to ensure that the Francisquito fire poses no danger to any values or infrastructure within the area."
