Firefighters managed to contain a grass fire south of Carlsbad Tuesday despite high winds. Eddy County Emergency Manager Jennifer Armendariz said firefighters from Eddy County Fire Services, several volunteer fire departments and the Bureau of Land Management responded to the fire at the Dog Town Draw, near United States Highway 62/180 around 3 p.m. Armendariz said the geography of the area gave firefighters a slight advantage. “It was in a ditch, so it was a little more contained, “she said.
Armendariz said the acreage burned by the fire was small. Armendariz said firefighters were called to another fire near the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant road, however no fire was confirmed. A vehicle fire was reported on U.S. Highway 62/180, Armendariz said. She said firefighters extinguished the blaze quickly.
