A smoldering fire in the Smokey Bear Range District of the Lincoln National Forest grew to 30 acres two days after officials noted its ignition.
The fire, which was dubbed Dark Canyon Fire, was ignited by a lightning strike on Aug. 4 the U.S. Forest Service said in a news release.
It was a "smoldering" fire, consuming grass and downed debris near Dark Canyon, about nine miles from the Village of Capitan.
When discovered the fire was less than an acre. By Thursday afternoon, the fire had grown to 30 acres.
"Firefighting resources, using a confine and contain strategy, are working to established containment lines that will hold fire growth to a defined area," the news release read.
"Crews will continue working the next several days securing and holding containment lines, in some cases using firing operations."
