Albuquerque Fire Rescue, the Fire Marshal’s Office, 311, and Parks and Recreation discussed this year’s busier than normal Fourth of July weekend on Monday, July 6, 2020. Officials highlighted the city’s call volume. AFR says they responded to 370 calls on Saturday night alone. 35 were brush fires, 11 were structure fire and nearly 300 were EMS calls. The city’s Firework Enforcement Units also responded to more than 90 locations handing out 55 cease-and-desist orders. “We would encourage folks if they have extra fireworks at home not to shoot them off anymore. It’s extremely dry still right now and fire danger is extremely high,” said Dave Simon of Albuquerque Parks and Rec. The illegal fireworks confiscated by the city will be turned over to APD’s bomb squad for disposal. 311 was also busy over the weekend receiving more than 5,000 complaints of illegal fireworks.
