Firefighters from around Taos County put out several brush fires along State Road 518 near Talpa Tuesday morning (May 26) as the flames were beginning to spread into the trees of Carson National Forest.
Taos Fire Department was the first agency to respond to the fires along the highway around 2 miles southeast of Talpa, where smoke was growing from the roadside brush. After a firefighter reported that the flames had spread on light winds to several trees in the national forest, that response grew to include multiple other county fire departments, which deployed additional water tankers and brush fire trucks.
"We have some big trees that are starting to pop off pretty quick," one first responder reported.
By around 11:50 a.m., additional fire teams, which had been placed on standby in case the fire spread further, were called off as first responders reported that they had a handle on the blaze.
