VIDEO: An iconic figure celebrated a big milestone Friday. Smokey Bear with the U.S. Forest Service turned 75. Smokey Bear has made such an impact nationwide over the decades. His message is a stark reminder that 9 out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans.
His image is used to educate the public about fire prevention and safety. Jennifer Diamond with the U.S. Forest Service said, “Seventy-five years ago the message still stays the same, it’s more relevant today now more than ever.” Diamond added, “Only you can prevent wildfires.”
Northern Nevada is no stranger to wildfires. Diamond provided tips on how to stay safe during fire season. She said, “Don’t park on dry tall grass, choose not to shoot when it’s dry, hot, and when it’s windy out there.”
She continued, “Check with your local ranger station to see if you can have a campfire. If you can, keep it small and properly extinguish it before you leave.”
