PHOTO: A homemade barbecue is to blame for a fire that damaged two east Las Vegas homes and displaced seven people, officials say. Las Vegas and Clark County firefighters responded to a fire near Eastern Avenue and Oakey Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. on June 16. When crews arrived, two houses were on fire. A covered patio of a house on Bonita Avenue was on fire as well as the outside wall of the house next door. Investigators believe a homemade barbecue on the patio is most likely what started the fire. An occupant told authorities the barbecue was used earlier. Damage is estimated at $50,000 between the two properties. Two people, one of the occupants and a neighbor, tried putting out the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. Officials say they both suffered smoke inhalation.
