VIDEO: The weather is changing, but fire officials are reminding people to be fire safe. In fact, it’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 6th to the 12th. The theme this year is, "Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape." The message is for both adults and kids to do a little bit around the house to save lives. Reno Fire Marshal Tray Palmer says seconds can mean the difference between people escaping safely or having their life end in tragedy. He recommends people check their smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly. Practice your home fire drill twice a year, preferably one at night and the other during the day. Teach your kids how to escape on their own, if you can't help them. To help slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire, close the doors behind you. One thing Palmer stresses is having multiple exits.
