Volunteer firefighters in our area and beyond have geared up for a two-week boot camp. Eleven recruits who just graduated high school or who are college students are gaining skills needed to be a volunteer firefighter. This includes students from Broome County and outside the Southern Tier. Broome County Emergency Services teamed up with the state of New York to put on this two-week training. "It's a good learning experience," said Five Mile Point Fire Company volunteer firefighter Alexis Comparetta. "It's a great learning experience." Comparetta says being in the boot camp has helped her grow. "We're doing a lot of work to get our skills sound," she said. "So when we see our actual first fires we're prepared." Volunteer firefighters and fire trucks filled the Fred Singer Fire Training Site in Vestal on Tuesday.
