An oil well fire that lit the sky and surrounding hillsides in the town of Allegany early Tuesday morning was fought by several fire departments and resulted in an oil spill of 150 gallons, reported fire department officials from the Cattaraugus County Office of Emergency Services. A press release from the office of Chris Baker, county fire coordinator, said a report of a fire at an oil well on Flatstone Road at Chipmonk Road in the town of Allegany was called in at 5:35 a.m. No injuries were reported among the firefighters. While Baker couldn’t be reached for additional comments, Cathi Gross, assistant to the director, said she was unaware who called in the report of the fire at the well reportedly owned by Vertical Energy.
