A man was rescued from the Irondequoit Bay after falling through the ice just north of the Bay Bridge. The chief with the Ridge Culver Fire Department says the man, believed to be in his 70s or 80s, was going for a walk on the ice when he fell through in an open area on the eastern side of the bay. The man was able to pull himself out of the water, but the ice broke more when crews came out to help him. Fire Chief Steve Sessler says he was in the water for about 15 to 20 minutes. "At first, he was in the water, managed to get himself up on the ice shelf but unable to move," Sessler said. "Usually once you get into cold water like that your ability to move is severely limited. He wasn't able to get himself any further."
