The FDNY paramedic who rescued a man’s severed arm on Staten Island told The Post on Thursday that his knowledge about the local bar scene helped save the man’s limb.
Frank Jost, 25, was working at a Staten Island EMT station Wednesday night filling in for another medic, when a call for a man with a severed arm after being hit by a train came over the radio.
“Once I heard limb on the radio, I thought: ICE. HOSPITAL. GO!” Jost told The Post.
He and other first responders rushed to the scene near the Pleasant Plains train station at about 10:40 p.m. He knew that the limb had to be packed in ice, and he knew the closest place to the station to get some was a bar called Hot Shotz. “I live in that neighborhood so I know there is a bar next to the station and I know how far the hospital is so I requested a bag of ice,” he said.
