The Champlain Fire District is proposing a $3.765 million project to bring its 33-year-old station up to date.
Those upgrades, including a 6,710-square-foot addition, would raise taxes 45 cents per $1,000 assessed value, equal to $49.95 per year on a $111,000 property.
That figures out to about $4.16 a month, district leaders say, or the cost of a gallon of milk.
A similar $3.369 million proposal was rejected by district residents back in July 2016; that vote's tally was 97 in favor to 101 against.
Champlain Volunteer Fire Department First Capt. Ryan Garrand knows the project's price tag may be a deterrent to some, but he hopes people will consider the need.
"People see the cost and they don't understand why it's so astronomically high for the square footage," he said.
