For more than a century, the Village of Victor has had an all-volunteer fire department. That could soon be over. On Tuesday voters will decide whether to dissolve the department and create a district independent of the village.
Victor fire chief Sean McAdoo said the reason is simple- more calls means the need for more people. They typically receive 500 calls per year, and that number has gone up steadily in the past 10 years.
"Volunteers can only give so much especially when they're working, and during the work week the one thing they can do is do the weekends and evenings which they very willingly do," McAdoo said.
Some Victor residents agree with the move.
"There are a lot more people moving to this area so as far as to have more people on staff to be able to fight fires and that sort of thing," said James Heath.
If the change passes, an elected commission of five people will have the ability to tax instead of the village, which makes up only 25 percent of the population the fire department serves.
