Downed power lines in Great Kills caused a fire to extend from an area of brush to a nearby home Tuesday afternoon. The fire came after Tropical Storm Isaias tore through Staten Island, leaving thousands without power, forcing a complete closure of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and causing roads to be closed throughout the borough. Mike Taliento, a resident of nearby Maybury Avenue, said he initially saw cable lines down in the area that fell to the ground and caused shrubbery between two homes to catch fire. Taliento said uniformed cops on scene initially got an FDNY truck to respond, but shortly after the rig left the area the “line hit the ground and fish-tailed and hit the back of the house,” causing “one big spark” to come up in the rear of the home.
