The state is launching a new effort to try to prevent firefighters from getting cancer. The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control will announce their plan on Wednesday in Latham. Studies have shown firefighters are experiencing cancer at higher rates than the general public, largely due to their exposure to an increased level of toxins found in smoke. State fire officials say they have developed a way for decontaminating firefighting gear. The event is being held at 9:45 a.m. at the Latham Fire Department, on Old Loudon Road.
