VIDEO: A fierce blaze gutted a former schoolhouse in Mattitick Sunday — the fire sent a spiral of billowing smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.
According to fire officials at the scene, the building was empty; the fire broke out at 4:28 p.m. at a structure on Oregon Road, once a school, that had later been converted into a residence. Mattituck, Cutchogue, Southold, Greenport, Jamesport, and Riverhead Fire Departments were among those that raced to the scene.
No additional details, including whether or not any injuries were reported, were immediately available.
