A woman in her 70s was airlifted to Albany Medical Center on Sunday after she was run over by her own car in Greenport, said Greenport Fire Chief John Onufrychuk.
The woman, who has not been identified, had injuries to her hip, leg and shoulder, Onufrychuk said.
At around 12:23 p.m. the woman was driving her minivan on an access road behind the Verizon Wireless store at 462 Fairview Ave. in Greenport, when she saw her brake light come on, Onufrychuk said. She got out of the vehicle to check on the problem, and the vehicle began rolling, knocked her down and dragged her approximately 50 feet before coming to rest on a curb, Onufrychuk said. Greenport firefighters and Greenport Rescue Squad worked to get the woman out from under the vehicle and checked on her injuries before transporting her to a LifeNet helicopter that was standing by in the Kohl’s parking lot, Onufrychuk said.
