New York City firefighters on Wednesday slammed the federal government for withholding funding for the FDNY’s 9/11 heath program.
For years, the U.S. Treasury Department has been holding nearly $4 million from the city’s sickened firefighters who are a part of the World Trade Center Health Program.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin sent a letter to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently, saying the city should have to pay to keep the program running, as the money is being withheld to cover the cost of New York’s Medicaid debt.
Andrew Ansbrow, who heads the Uniformed Firefighters Association, says the money could go to hire more doctors, and says firefighters shouldn’t have to suffer because of politics.
“If you wanna get your cancer treatment, you don't want to hear, ‘You can't come in this week, can you come in two weeks?’” Ansbrow said.
