Fire crews were called to the scene of a fire at Harbor Point Mineral Products in North Utica Thursday afternoon, where officials say products started to self-combust.
The fire department was called to the business, which is located on Wurz Avenue, at 11:35 a.m.
Harbor Point is a company that supplies ingredients for the pet food industry, and has several mineral and chemical products in the facility.
"Products started to spontaneously self-combust and got hot on its own, and set...a wall on fire that's actually between the two vaults," said Utica Fire Chief Scott Ingersoll. "Each vault is about 25 feet tall by 10 feet wide filled with two different types of products. We've identified the products as a palm oil derivative and a sodium bicarb[onate]."
Crews had to attack the fire carefully because of where it was located and the products involved.
