About 100 firefighters, paramedics and other FDNY staff gathered outside a Bronx emergency medical services station Saturday, to honor a probationary firefighter who died after suffering a medical episode during a training exercise. Firefighter Vincent Malveaux, 31, began to feel ill and lost consciousness during an academy training exercise Thursday at the FDNY Training Academy on Randall’s Island. Malveaux, who was affectionately known to his former colleagues as “Pablo,” was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he died Friday. During Saturday’s ceremony, some of his former co-workers honored his service by huddling together and then hanging a purple and black bunting outside EMS Station 19 in University Heights, where he previously worked as an EMT for four years. “People get recognized for the most heroic jobs that they do, but Pablo, he was heroic with every job, every patient that he had,” recalled a teary-eyed former colleague Christian Marte to News 12.
