Massena Village Deputy Mayor Matt LeBire sought approval for the fire department to begin looking into the replacement of an aging fire engine Tuesday. He said the department’s Engine 38 is approaching 28 years of service, that’s about three years past the average lifespan for a piece of equipment of its kind. He said while the village isn’t in “horrible” shape with it, signs of wear and tear are creeping up. “It’s starting to rear its ugly head in terms of repairs,” he said. LeBire said firefighter’s asked him to bring the idea to the trustees before they begin the process of searching for a means to replace it. LeBire noted that it can take more than a year to complete the replacement process and they wanted to make sure the village trustees were informed about the idea before moving forward.
