While there are multiple ways of tracking progress for the Fishers Fire Department, the most notable metric in seeing how far the department has come is from the volume of calls, according to Joel Richter. "We ran about 120 alarms, requests for service of any kind when I was chief. And now it's over 1,000," Richter said. First formed on June 21, 1921, the fire department is celebrating 100 years of service this year -- and according to Richter, who's been a member for 45 years, the number of calls received isn't the only thing that's changed. The department has also moved a number of times, starting at an old property donated to the department on Railroad Street before moving the service to an old school building on Wangum Road in the 1940s, then moving again to 7853 Main Street Fishers, according to Richter. Similarly, the way fire alarms are broadcast has also changed significantly from their inception.
