It’s been almost 21 years since FDNY firefighter Michael Kiefer made the ultimate sacrifice on Sept. 11. Today, dozens of Long Island residents took on a challenging workout in Long Beach to honor his memory.
Kiefer was a member of Ladder 132 in Brooklyn.
The Michael V. Kiefer Swim Paddle Run triathlon started with a 150 yard run to the ocean, a half-mile paddle board segment and a 1.5-mile run on the beach.
Every lap and step of the way reminded participants of Kiefer’s heroism and giving spirit. Long Beach resident John Skudin remembers Kiefer as someone who loved what he did.
“Loved being a firefighter. Loved being a lifeguard. Loved the ocean,” said Skudin. “We want to honor that.”
As a Long Beach resident, Kiefer spent many summers as a lifeguard.
