VIDEO: The Albany Fire Department mourns the loss of one of its own on Saturday. Chief Joseph Gregory reports the death of Firefighter Edward J. Verhoff on November 12, 2022 while off duty. Verhoff was a 16-year member of the Albany Fire Department, having been appointed on September 6, 2006. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said, “On behalf of the entire City of Albany, it is with a very heavy heart we acknowledge the passing of Albany Fire Department Firefighter Ed Verhoff. Ed was the consummate public servant and always brought a smile to the face of everyone who interacted with him. Not only did Ed serve our City with distinction as a first responder but he was also a fierce advocate for his fellow firefighters as Vice President of the Albany Permanent Professional Firefighters Association Local 2007 as well as a member of the Albany County Democratic Committee and numerous other community-based organizations."
