What began as a project to add a space large enough to park an aerial truck at Union Township Fire Station 49 on Old Ohio 74 turned into a whole lot more. Union Township Fire Department anticipates improved response times to properties in the northern portion of the township as a result of the renovations. The $1.3 million project, partially funded with a $259,500 grant, included the addition of an aerial truck bay, construction of a new roof structure, expansion of existing bays and some interior work. There has long been a need for an aerial truck at station No. 49, Chief Stanley Deimling said during Monday's rededication ceremony. The station serves a predominantly commercial district that includes multifloor, multiple-family housing as well, he said.
