The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office said 76-year-old Thomas W. Kelley was the man killed in a truck fire Wednesday in Canal Winchester behind Home Depot and near the U.S. 33/ Gender Road interchange. Kelley was from Canal Winchester. "The preliminary examination shows that smoke inhalation and heat were the causes of death," Chief Deputy Alex Lape said on Friday. Sheriff Dave Phalen said it doesn't look like foul play was involved. Lape said Kelley's red 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck got stuck in water and mud off the roadway behind Home Depot and that Kelley was trying to free it when it caught fire. There are still questions regarding the case, including what caused the fire and why Kelley could not get out of the truck. But Lape said toxicology reports may show if he was overcome by carbon monoxide or otherwise incapacitated. The Madison Township Fire Department responded to the scene around 11 p.m. after a passing motorist on U.S. 33 called the Franklin County Sheriff's Office to report a vehicle fire and that office notified Fairfield County officials.
