The only gift that can hold a candle to the gift of life is the kind of gift that can save a life. And when that gift is shared among community members, everyone wins.
Recently, the Willoughby Fire Department accepted grant money for eight defibrillators, also referred to as AEDs, effectively equipping all fire department vehicles with the ability to save a life.
Area Firehouse Subs restaurants raised just under $12,000 through their program — the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation — which was given to the department after firefighters applied for the grant and requested AED equipment for eight vehicles that were lacking it.
On March 13, the AEDs were presented to the department at Firehouse Subs. Chief Todd Ungar spoke to the firefighters and restaurant staff present. He highlighted that the new AEDs would "fill the gaps" in the department's fleet of vehicles.
