We all know that firefighters have a dangerous job, performing tasks such as fighting fires, saving people and pets from burning structures. But what many may not know is that increased dangers face them after a fire.
Because furniture and other household items such as toys, TVs and many other items in a house are made of synthetic materials and coatings, they give off carcinogens as they burn, causing high cancer rates among firefighters.
The Village of Lakemore Fire Department recently purchased two items to help fight the after effects of fighting fires.
Assistant Chief Joe Dies explained that the infra-red two-man sauna it purchased is helping in the fight against the carcinogens. It is used for cancer reduction and prevention in the fire service.
