Crews from several fire departments were called out early Friday when flames broke out at a duplex in Cortland. A caller to Trumbull 9-1-1 reported that flames spread from the fireplace on one side of the duplex on Cedar Circle shortly before 5 am. Dispatchers told people living there to get out of the home while fire departments were on their way. Firefighters made sure that residents from the other side of the duplex were evacuated as well. Flames gutted a child's room on the second floor and heavily damaged an outside wall of the duplex. The fire was under control within a half hour an no one was injured. The Red Cross has been called in case any of the residents need shelter or clothing assistance for the woman and her daughter. The State Fire Marshal has been called to assist the investigation.
