Increases in fire department expenses have led to village officials asking the township to take over the department. “I don’t know. We’ve never done this,” said Weston Township Trustee Jacob Brown. “We don’t know if the village supports the additional funding. We don’t know if the township supports this.” The village has asked the township takeover to be complete by Jan. 1. A special trustees’ meeting to discuss fire/EMS contracts was held May 13. A public forum to discuss the township takeover of the fire department will take place on June 18 at 6 p.m. at the safety building located at 20761 Taylor St. The stumbling block for determining a transfer date is the loss of funds contributed by the village. Brown said it would require a levy. The lag in time between collection of the funds from a new levy and the drop in financial support from the village was also discussed. The levy has to get on the ballot in August, if there is to be a vote in November.
