Fairport Harbor Fire Department has improved the rating of its fire protection capabilities that is determined by a national organization.
The Insurance Services Office, or ISO, Public Protection Classification for the department recently was lowered from 4 to 3. ISO’s PPC rankings range from 1 to 10, with 1 being the best and 10 the worst.
ISO, a company located in Jersey City, New Jersey, issues PPCs by conducting audits or surveys of all fire departments in the United States on a rotating basis. Fairport Harbor Fire Chief Bob Lloyd said the village’s department is reviewed by ISO every five years. Ratings are based on a fire department’s operations, training and equipment; how well it receives and dispatches fire calls, and the water supply in the community served by a fire department.
Lloyd, who was hired as fire chief in February 2018, said improvements in the department played a big role in achieving a better ISO rating.
