‘They appreciate that we’re still out working’: Hamilton firefighters balance caution, duty after first coronavirus death

Four Hamilton firefighters who transported the 86-year-old man who was Butler County’s first to die of the coronavirus were placed under 14-day quarantine on Monday. But after re-reviewing guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, city officials on Thursday lifted quarantines for three of them. The one paramedic who remains under quarantine rode in the back of the ambulance with the patient and had more exposure because of that. He is taking his temperature twice a day and texting results to the city’s health department.“We did that out of just out of being exceptionally cautious with our people,” Fire Chief Mark Mercer said about the initial quarantine.
