While fighting what turned out to be a small fire, a Cincinnati firefighter took a step Monday morning that could have cost him his life.
"When they went in to try to extinguish it, one of the firefighters fell, there was an open shaft where there should have been a staircase. And he fell approximately 8 to 10 feet," Cincinnati District Fire Chief Nate Cash said. "It definitely wakes you up and gets the heart racing," Cincinnati Firefighters Union Local 48 President Matt Alter said.
Alter said he found out that one of his colleagues was injured a little before six a.m.
"(The injured firefighter) suffered multiple broken ribs, broken back, some contusions, and some other injuries, other broken bones," Alter said. "Never a call you want to receive."
Fire officials have yet to release the name of the injured firefighter, but Alter made it clear help is on the way.
